I have lived in Manassas, Virginia since 1992 after my time in the USAF.
I was married and have two grow kids. My youngest is living in Myrtle Beach, SC where she will be attending college, which is why I can barely afford to fly pattern.
I flew some RC in college, but really got into RC flying in 1993. I started flying pattern around 97/98. This was soon after I asked someone in the club how come Bill's and Mike's planes flew so much better than mine did. So the someone (Pete Rawlings) proceeded to fly the pants off my old Great Planes model. So started my program of learn to fly better (with precision) very soon afterwards.
As my age increases and eye sight gets worse I have come to the point where I mainly compete against myself. Each step at flying my sequence better is a small victory. I have a lot of chances at small improves this year as I learn the advanced sequence.
I have been flying Focus models since they came out. I currently have a Focus 2 and a Focus Sport. Since I have a habit of flying a few models into the ground when I move up, I plan on flying the focus sport most of this year. I use JR equipment and OS engines.
Children—All living away from home, That’s why I can afford to fly pattern.
How long have I been flying—1st time I experienced RC approximately 1973.
How long have I been flying pattern—At least 15 years off and on.Begin with 1st contest in Va Beach. (1983) Took a break for 3 or 4 years around 1993 and then flew IMAC full time until the last 2 years at which time I moved back into pattern. I am enjoying pattern even more.
What attracted me to Pattern?—Pattern flying requires the pilot to have complete control of his airplane. There is a purpose to your flying with a reward of being a better pilot. I have no interest in flying if I have no definition of flight. As I have gotten older I definitely value the friendships from the people I have meant while flying pattern. When everyone meets at a contest we are all the same, we simply want to enjoy flying!
What would I like to get out of the Hobby? – I believe I have already found what I was looking for :
1.Meeting great people
2.Becoming a better pilot
3.Finding away to relax and forget stress. ( I know contest are stressful but they bring a different type stress)
4.I also enjoy building a flying pattern type aircraft.
Airplane/Equipment I fly:
JR radio equipment – 10X currently. Recently purchased JR 9303 2.4 and will move to it during 2008.
I will campaign 2008 with Integral possibly a Black Magic VF3 by district championships.
Backup will be Impact or BRIO
Largest accomplishment: Winning D2 championship (Intermediate) I was concern because of my age I would not be able to fly well enough against the talent in D2.
Hello, my name is Marvin Marozas. I live on the coast of South Carolina in the historic seaport of Georgetown with my wife of 30+ years, Anne Marie. I have two sons, Michael a computer engineer and Jason a network technician. We're a geeky family - Anne Marie is the technology coordinator for the high school and I am Vice President for IT at Coastal Carolina University.
I was born in the mountains of North Carolina in 1955, but moved to Aiken, SC when I was about a year old. I got started in model airplanes at an early age, first in plastic models and then in control line when I was 12. I flew fast combat and competed several times at the US Championships. When I was in college I started flying RC with a 60 size Ugly Stick and Kraft radio. I spent countless hours at R.E. Walker's hobby shop in Augusta, GA admiring their sleek fleet of pattern planes. Augusta was a pattern hotbed back then. I was awestruck as I watched how precisely a pattern plane could fly in the hands of a skilled pilot. I dreamed of owning and flying a pattern plane. For Christmas in 1974 I got a Kwik Fly III and started building it. But, with meager funds, marriage right after I graduated college, and the start of a family a couple of years later, it was 1987 before I got back into flying RC on a regular basis. I flew my first pattern meet in the spring of 1988 in Sumter, SC. I finished the Kwik Fly and flew it at the Augusta contest in fall of the same year.I've been flying pattern ever since.
I'm currently flying a Focus with an OS 140RX that I built in 2001. I'm slowly building a Focus II and hope to be flying it later this spring. I fly with Futaba radios. When I first started flying pattern it was all about winning. I won my fair share, and like most things in life, found that the results were directly proportional to the effort invested. But, as the years have gone by and my skills, competitive juices, and effort have waned, I find that I've stuck with pattern for a totally different reason than I started. It is now all about the camaraderie and spending time with a wonderful fraternity of fellow pilots who share the same passion.Let’s go fly!
Flying since 1993, IMAC since 1999, Pattern for two years
Attracted to pattern to achieve a higher level of flying and to make new friends
Airplanes flown include: Smaragd Z, Evolution 2, Icepoint, 40% Tom Miller Staudacher, 39% J'Tec Extra 330LX, 40% Carden Cap 232, Obsession, all flown with either Futaba 9ZWC2, or Airtronics Stylus
What I would like to get out of the hobby would be fun, new friendships, just be a contender day in and day out, new technology, and an experience to remember.
Biggest accomplishments include: Don Lowe Masters pilot 2001, 2003, 3D Aerobatic Shootout winner, Golden thumbs award.
Has designed a 2 meter pattern airplane concept called "Serenity"
